What is Microdermabrasion – FAQ

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a procedure where a diamond-tipped treatment head and fine Alum Oxide crystals are used to abrade the surface of the skin. This abrasion gently removes dead skin and debris, whilst stimulating the skin’s natural process of hydration and skin renewal. Microdermabrasion will leave skin smoother and softer, with a more even skin tone.

What type of skin will benefit from microdermabrasion?

Clients with skin imperfections such as congested/dull skin, open pores, thickened skin, over-exposed skin, visible signs of ageing and clogged pores will benefit from microdermabrasion. This is not the limit of microdermabrasion; however, it can also be used on almost any skin type for a fresh, clean appearance.

How long does a microdermabrasion treatment take?

Microdermabrasion is perfect for busy salons as it can be performed in as little as half an hour depending on the condition being treated and the area affected.

How will the skin look immediately after a treatment?

Overall the skin will look clean and healthy and will immediately feel smoother to the touch. There may be a slight red/flushed appearance, and this is completely normal and is actually encouraged as it means blood has been drawn closer to the epidermis, and will help with the skin’s natural renewal process.  Clients can return to their normal activities immediately, with no down time, and can continue their normal skin care routine that evening.

How many treatments are required?

The skin will look and feel different from just one treatment, but a series of six to eight treatments at fortnightly intervals is recommended for maximum results, with maintenance treatments every four to eight weeks. Obviously this will depend slightly on the condition being treated and the skin type.

Is microdermabrasion safe?

Yes! Microdermabrasion is completely safe, and has been used for over 25 years in numerous medical procedures, medical spas, the offices of aestheticians and dermatologists around the world, and has been researched and studied too many times to count.  It is an easy to grasp treatment, with therapists trained and ready to perform treatments in a few hours.

Can Microdermabrasion be performed with other treatments?

Absolutely! Microdermabrasion is extremely versatile and can be performed in conjunction with oxygen therapy, microcurrent, chemical peels and LED therapy; just to name a few. Treatments should be performed separately at first (to check for any reactions), and then in conjunction with each other.
